The Ketogenic Diet | The Diet Craze Of The Future | The Benefits of Fat

Monday, November 3, 2014

Diet crazes come and go – from Atkins to Weight Waters and more recently The Paleo Diet. Although many people have achieved success with all these, most fad diets have their pitfalls.

As we know, everyone’s body is different in terms of their unique biochemistry, which explains why particular diets will work for some and not for others, although they are consuming the exact same foods!

Many people achieve results from certain diets just because they advocate the reduction or elimination of processed foods and added sugars. Just making these changes alone will help massively in optimising your weight and health.

But today we’re talking about a new diet, which we think is going to be the next BIG thing. Although not new (it was popular way back in 1920s), it is now starting to be realised among the public at large.

The Ketogenic Diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet that was originally used to treat epilepsy in children.

More specifically it calls for eliminating all but non-starchy vegetable carbohydrates, and replacing them with healthy fats and high-quality protein. It requires that 50 to 70 percent of your food intake comes from beneficial fats, such as coconut oil, grass-pastured butter, organic pastured eggs, avocado, and raw nuts.

The reason I believe this specific way of eating is going to become a lot more popular in years to come is because people are beginning to realize the benefits of good quality fats. Surprisingly, they can actually help you lose fat!

When you eat good fats as part of your meal, they slow down absorption so that you can go longer without feeling hungry.

Fat and in particular, saturated fat, has been demonized in recent decades mainly due to Ancel Keys’s landmark ‘seven countries’ study in 1970.

Keys suggested, through what became known as the ‘diet-heart hypothesis’, that dietary fat raised cholesterol, subsequently increasing heart disease. This along with other studies he conducted is what ultimately led to the low fat diet craze of recent years.

Today many researchers are realizing the floors in much of Key’s work. They are beginning to realize that fat and saturated fat in particular were unfairly seen as the culprits and in fact sugar was the problem.

The effectiveness of The Ketogenic Diet comes down to it helping your body convert from carb burning mode to fat burning. Your cells have the metabolic flexibility to adapt from using glucose for fuel to using ketone bodies, which come from the breakdown of fats.

Some great sources of fat include avocados, butter made from raw grass-fed organic milk, coconuts and coconut oil, organic pastured egg yolks, grass fed meats, raw nuts, such as almonds or pecans and seeds and other raw dairy.

Keep an eye out for this diet. Unlike other fad diets, this has real potential to help people lose weight and optimize their health. Healthy fat really is the way to go. People need to stop seeing fat as the enemy!
